Series final ★★★½

9.05pm, ABC

There’s so much ugly sadness in this comedy that it feels a wrong to laugh, even at the hilarious dialogue between saucy parolee, Bev (the marvellous Doris Younane) and her on-again, off-again lover, Jim (Ben Mingay), who’s also the brother to fallen English socialite, Sammy (creator, Sarah Kendall). As the latter’s recovering alcoholic mother, Kerry Armstrong gives a shattering performance. Here’s hoping for more of this homecoming masterpiece.

Every frame of this BBC Earth nature documentary is exotic and captivating, but a highlight of this second piece, covering creatures of the Asian continent, has to be the Battle of the Snow Monkeys filmed in the Chinese wilderness. Their little pale blue faces are so full of expression, anthropomorphism is tempting. Thankfully, the sage Sir David Attenborough provides the stirring narration to explain their predicament, in his inimitable dulcet tones. Next week: Antarctica.
