Carly Rae Jepsen
Enmore Theatre, November 26
The paradox of Carly Rae Jepsen is that for all her sickly sweet innocence, she may be pop’s guiltiest pleasure.
The Canadian singer has defied one-hit wonder gravity after the viral success of 2011’s Call Me Maybe to produce a couple of solid disco-pop albums. And while she may not be a cultural icon, these ’80s-infused ballads and bangers have turned Jepsen into a cult figure, at least judging by the fans who sang every word and cheered every step she took during her first Sydney show.
Reliable openers Run Away With Me and E.MO.TION set the tone for the relentless upbeat pop that followed, Jepsen striding across the stage swishing a ruffled layer dress and at times having her voice drowned out by the crowd. Even newer material, such as the Abba-esque Julien, goes down without a hitch.
